Mener is no stranger to the world of electronic music. Since his first introduction to the party scene in the winter of 1993, he has been addicted to the music. He soon immersed himself in many aspects of the party scene and started breakdancing and doing graffiti, but didn’t start DJ’ing until 1997. When asked why he began DJ’ing, he confesses, “I decided at one point after going to so many parties, it was time to either join in building the scene or move on to something else, so I started throwing parties. I never planned to become a DJ, but someone had to open at the parties I was throwing, so the progression was easy.”
Although he was throwing raves, he was opening his own shows by playing his first musical love: hip hop. After seeing how much more the crowd responded to house and breaks, the transition of musical choice was swift and the first emergence of the DJ we know as Mener was born.
After some small success in Reno, Mener moved to Sacramento to seek bigger opportunities. Living in such a competitive environment helped him fine tune his skills behind the decks. At this point he started to network and push himself like crazy and this allowed him to play across the country. From San Francisco to Seattle; from LA to New York; from St. Louis to D.C. and everywhere in between, dropping funky beats along the way.
After taking a short break from the scene to move to San Francisco and shift the focus to his career, he is now back and better then ever. “I really needed to step back and pay attention to other aspects of my life. This reflection time was also really good for me, as it allowed me to really reinvent my sound and I now feel as though I’m playing the kind of music I always wanted to play.”
His music runs the gamut from deep sexy house, to hands-in-the-air bangin’ breakbeats. Whatever music the situation calls for, be it 50 people or 5,000 people, rest assured it’s always gonna be funky as hell!!
